Location:
Mannheim, Germany Date: August
24, 1991
Information: Sold out show in Germany. Nine Inch Nails had technical problems which displeased the crowd, making them show the GnR ticket in the air. GnR went on around 9:30pm and the problems continued well into GnR's set. Axl left the stage after "Live And Let Die", throwing his mic in the air. The rest of the band followed, and Slash told the crowd that they were switching guitars. 20 minutes later they returned. The band played through the show with almost no talking at all. During the band introductions, Axl says "on the rhythm guitar: Izzy Reed... ah Stradlin!". Izzy changes a line in "14 Years" to "Up to my neck in horseshit", with the next one possibly being changed to "with dust and pain". Axl changes a line in a later chorus to "It's been 14 years of fucking pain", screaming out the last two words. Someone say "motherfucker" later in the song. Axl change the first line of "Estranged" to "When you're talking to yourself, and somebody's home". |

Slash: We had a situation in
Mannheim, Germany a while back. Axl simply walked off the stage and...
somehow there wasn't possible to understand quite what was the cause for
what was going on in his mind. There were many people out there who, you
know, you gotta... Duff: And that's the night Izzy decided he was going to quit. For me that was kinda the end of GnR. Slash and me just wanted to do the tour from that point on. Slash: Everything went along very well, business as usual, until we got to Mannheim, Germany, on August 21, 1991 [in fact it was the 24th]. We had Nine Inch Nails on the bill as well for that date, and we went on late - late even for us - then, pretty early in the set, something happened and Axl walked off for what reason I have no idea. He wasn't getting heckled as far as I could see, no one hit him with a bottle or anything, but he wasn't having it. The stage at that venue was literally about a mile away from the production office and dressing room, so a van was there to shuttle us back and forth. When Axl left the stage, he went to the van and headed off to the dressing room. [...] The promoters saw the drama going on and closed the gates around the venue so that we couldn't leave. [...] We got Axl back onstage once he realized he had no choice, and the rest of the show went as planned.1 Slash: The next morning, Izzy sent a message through Alan informing us that he was quitting the band. He would finish the last few dates on the current leg of the tour, but after that he was done.2 |
