November 8, 2006 What's wrong with Merck?

This is written in response to Merck's at HTGTH, which can be read here.

First I would like to thank Axl and Merck for posting something through a fan page. I appreciate reading this, and as much as I like quotes, I may have gotten some of those. Also I feel the explanation of the cancelled concert is good, and it makes sense (at least to some point). I feel that's a discussion that should be closed, since it's both to the advantage of the band, and it's a discussion fans wont get anywhere with.

I would also like to thank Merck for finally confirming that the management are using their influence to censor fans, despite trying to label it with other words. Merck says Jarmo is removing posts by their request. His conclusion is that it's not censorship if what removed is "lies and disinformation". Sorry, but this smells like an argument stolen from a Stalinist regime!

My take on this is that it should not matter who says something, what they say as long as it does not constitute racist attacks or similar. I personally believe that in 2006, a Guns n' Roses forum should practice freedom of speech. I find it ironic that I have to say it, but this isn't North-Korea...

Merck also tries backing up his claim by saying that "Jarmo is [fans'] greatest ally" and that this "proximity to us [the management]" is of benefit to the fans. Sorry, but Jarmo is not a great ally of fans when he's making it difficult for people to get news. And to put it with other words: If I have to choose between New North Korean Times and a British newspaper, I know what I choose: The one without the Merck-filter!

Hence, I think Merck is wrong when claiming that this "proximity" is good. And the fact that people discuss it, indicates that I'm right. Otherwice there would be no discussion.

To Merck's defense, I think he is only trying to do his job the right way. Of course what Merck fears seems to be that fans will check the postings at that forum, and then decide not to go. He's only trying to promote the band. And I've seen them, and I agree. The shows may vary a little, but at their best, they are truly great, and everyone should experience that.

One thing I feel now is warranted is that Merck reveals what Jarmo is getting for doing this. If  Merck would comment on that, I would be happy. Until then, I guess it's all about Here Today, Gone To Free Acoustic Shows!
